    Pangea Day is almost here!
    Posted by Ran

What if, for one day, people of every race and color around the world could come together as one? Find out on May 10th…

Starting at 18:00 GMT on May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire program will be broadcast – in seven languages – to millions of people worldwide through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

The 24 short films to be featured have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over one hundred countries. The films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and allow us see the world through another person’s eyes. Details on the Pangea Day films can be viewed here.

The program will also include a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among those taking part.

Jehane Noujaim was rewarded a TED wish in 2006. Her wish was to connect the world through film. Fellow TEDsters got to work and made it happen. Don’t you just love it when people get together for a good cause? Well, that’s the whole idea behind TED.

    Twitter saves Berkeley student
    Posted by Ran

When Egyptian police scooped up UC Berkeley graduate journalism student James Karl Buck, who was photographing a noisy demonstration, and dumped him in a jail cell last week, they didn’t count on Twitter.

Buck, 29, a former Oakland Tribune multimedia intern, used the ubiquitous short messaging service to tap out a single word on his cellular phone: ARRESTED. The message went out to the cell phones and computers of a wide circle of friends in the United States and to the mostly leftist, anti-government bloggers in Egypt who are the subject of his graduate journalism project.

    My 43 Things
    Posted by Ran

Here are my 43 Things, if you’re so interested. Well… currently it’s only 23 things. It’s been pretty useful for me to keep track of the things I want to do. Some are short term goals I want to get done in a few days, and some are things I hope to accomplish some day. The link to my 43 Things is also in the links section on the right. Do you have a list? If so I’d love to see it.

    Google Transit
    Posted by Ran

Currently only offered in less than 2 dozen cities in the U.S., Google Transit helps you get around using public transportation rather than driving. I gave it a test by choosing an origin and destination that has multiple routes between them:

My apartment: 9801 Stonelake Blvd 78759
    Cain & Abel’s: 2313 Rio Grande St 78705
    Arrive by: 12:00pm

It showed that I can either take the express buses that takes the freeway, or the #3 which makes frequent stops. The cool part is that even though the #3 bus takes me closer to my destination, Google still chooses an express bus for me since it’s faster.

    New take on speed-dating
    Posted by Ran

WooMe.com is a newly launched community site. People join in small groups and have a set amount of time to one-on-one video chat with everyone. Then you decide if you were “wooed” by anyone, and if the other person was wooed as well, each of you pay $1 for contact info. Pretty cool idea, but let’s see if this start-up has any staying power.

    iConcert Calendar
    Posted by Ran

If you have iTunes then you should definitely get this free plug-in. It looks up all the artists you have in your iTunes and then lists their show dates, if any, up to several months into the future. The new version also lists new album release dates of your artists. Above is screen shot of my show date calendar. The weekend of September 14-16 is ACL (2007 lineup), hence the jam packed shows. Another new feature is the ability to share calenders with people. Not really sure how well it works yet. But type in my user name: cygnus183 (duh) and see if my calendar comes up. Then let me know your user name, I wanna see this feature in action.

    43 Things
    Posted by Ran

If you haven’t been to 43 Things you should check it out. It’s a place where you can compile a list of 43 things that you want to do. In most cases the task will already have been posted by other people so you’ll be joining their group.

For example, I wanted to put together a portfolio. So I searched for it and found 66 other people who wanted to do the same thing. And since I just now finished the portfolio, I logged back in and clicked on “I’ve done this”. Then I can write about it and other people can ask me questions about it. It’s all very web 2.0. I don’t have 43 things yet, but you can check out what are currently on my list.

    TED
    Posted by Ran

The annual Technology, Entertainment, Design conference brings together speakers from around the globe, each getting 18 minutes to fascinate and inspire the audience with their ideas in art, science, technology, nature, humanity, music, religion and everything in between.

The speakers are a veritable who’s who of the world’s best and brightest. Recognizable names such as Bill Clinton, Bono, Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon), Richard Dawkins, Peter Gabriel, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Sergey Brin and Larry Page (co-founders of Google), Tony Robbins, and James Watson share the stage with unfamiliar, but equally, if not more compelling speakers like Wade Davis (National Geographic), David Deutsch (physicist at the University of Oxford), Frans Lanting (nature photographer), Rev. Tom Honey (Canon Pastor of Exeter Cathedral), Helen Fisher (anthropologist), Joshua Prince-Ramus (architecture), and Jehane Noujaim (filmmaker).

One of the highlights of the event is the TED Prize. Three people are selected before the conferenc, each getting some prize money and, more importantly, one wish to present to the TED attendees. This is the 2nd year for the TED Prize, one of last year’s prize winner was Bono, and his wish was “to help build a social movement of more than one million american activists for Africa”. TEDsters acted and set up ONE.org, Sun Microsystems provided technology support, others provided funding, marketing, and media access. Today, ONE is a network more than two million strong.

This year, another wish maker was Dr. Larry Brilliant who played an important role in the wiping out of Small Pox. His wish was to help build an early warning system to protect us from a pandemic outbreaks such as the Bird Flu. In addition to other supporters, he was approached by the founders of Google to head up their $1 billion philanthropic foundation Google.org. It will give him a great head start in reaching his goal.

Check out the documentary The Future We Will Create: Inside the World of TED, It will make you feel better about the state of the world and humanity. Also, be sure to go to TED.com and watch and be inspired by these brilliant speakers.
